There are several open positions in the trucking industry. In fact, according to a spokesman for the American Trucking Association, there are roughly between 20,000 and 30,000 open trucking positions currently in the United States.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics expects this number to grow quite substantially by 2020, with 330,000 drivers needed by the time that fiscal year becomes a reality. A large problem involving the shortage of drivers is centered around current drivers aging and retiring before a new driver replaces them in their position.
Large trucking companies claim that they are constantly looking for new truckers, because they have large amounts of freight to move across the United States. Wages for these positions have also increased due to the strong competition among trucking companies for new employees.
