The Truck Tonnage Index dropped by 4 percent in January 2012. In December 2011, there was a 6.4 percent increase in truck tonnage.
The American Trucking Association announced the numbers for January, claiming that they were the seasonally adjusted numbers for the industry. The chief economist of ATA is not surprised that the tonnage index fell in January on a seasonal basis, mainly because of how strong the month of December was for the trucking industry.
The tonnage index reported a 5.8 percent increase for the 2011 fiscal year.
