DOT denies Pennsylvania's toll request

The U.S. Department of Transportation rejected Pennsylvania's request to make Interstate 80 a toll road because the funding did not comply with federal standards, officials report. According to federal requirements, revenue from a toll road must be used exclusively for maintaining that particular road.

The State of Pennsylvania wanted to use the revenue to fund other state projects, so the application was denied. After that decision, Pennsylvania Gov. Edward Rendell (D) called a special meeting to patch a budget hole of nearly $500 million.
