The Georgia Bureau of Investigation's Major Theft Unit was created to target those responsible for cargo theft. The Georgia Motor Trucking Association recently donated $16,000 to the unit. Cargo theft is a big concern for freight haulers, and carries a significant cost. Georgia's governor commended the company for helping efforts to combat the crime.
The unit, created last year, has already recovered $17 million in stolen cargo and arrested 71 people, as well as seizing $1.2 million in drug contraband. Georgia is one of the leading states for cargo crime, but the state hopes to use the contribution to purchase equipment for the unit and to train law enforcement.
