11-hour driving rule may be altered for truck drivers

Posted by Genie Wood on Thu, Dec 08, 2011 @ 12:22 AM

Truck drivers and insurance groups are hoping that the 11-hour rule that is currently imposed on the trucking industry will change.

Currently, truck drivers are required to drive for 11 hours every day of the week that they are working. Truck drivers are not paid for the amount of hours they work but rather for the amount of miles they drive. As a result of these long days, truck drivers are expected to live 16 years less than the average American.

A safer 10-hour rule has been proposed because the 11-hour rule can be a danger to the public. Every year there are approximately 4,000 fatalities that result from commercial truck accidents.  Although the current rule may increase the profits of the trucking companies, they are clearly a hazard to the truck driver's health.

A final regulation regarding this topic is set to be issued on December 30.

Trucking crucial to America's economy

Posted by Genie Wood on Fri, Dec 02, 2011 @ 02:34 AM

The trucking business, although considered fairly new, has developed into a crucial part of the American economy.

Trucks were first utilized in the 1950s to mobilize fresh produce to different parts of the United States. The goods being transported began increasing and more and more trucks were put into motion.

Private trucking companies became popular in the later years and an array of products and materials were moved all over the country. By the time the 1990s rolled around there were over 10 million trucks driving on America's highways.

Trucking allows for people to experience their high standard of living that they have grown accustomed to in the United States. The future of trucking will follow closely with the economy and supply chain.

Trucker saves woman from potential murder

Posted by Genie Wood on Tue, Nov 22, 2011 @ 01:04 AM

A truck driver in Pennsylvania is being praised as a hero after he saved the life of a woman who was about to be murdered.

The trucker was driving along Interstate 380 when he noticed a car stopped with a man holding a gun to a woman's head. He decided he had to stop and help so he pulled his truck over and quickly approached the situation. The man tried to shoot the woman but the gun he was using had jammed. He was beating her with the edge of the gun when the trucker approached and pulled her into his truck with him.

The man followed the truck driver who began to swerve to obstruct his path. The driver made sure to radio in to other truck drivers why he was driving so eradically and he also alerted police.

Police were able to catch up to the pursuit and bring down the man with the gun. The man then confessed that he had every intention of killing the woman and then himself after he found out she was pregnant with his child. He was taken to jail and his bail was set at $2 million.

The truck driver told reporters that he knew he had to stop and help the woman because it was the right thing to do.

Recourse vs. Non-Recourse Truck Factoring

Posted by Genie Wood on Fri, Nov 18, 2011 @ 02:05 AM

Freight factoring consists of many options and varieties. The two main types of truck factoring include; recourse truck factoring and non-recourse truck factoring.

Recourse truck factoring means that the person purchasing the insurance on the truck is willing to put the credit on their shoulders. This responsibility of credit fees allows for the rates to be lower than non-recourse truck factoring and therefore more affordable.

Non-recourse truck factoring involves the company taking the credit risk so there is no credit liability for the driver. The company is responsible for dealing with credit problems. This option works well for companies that are operating between one and five trucks.

Trucking beneficial to economy

Posted by Genie Wood on Wed, Nov 02, 2011 @ 06:23 AM

The Truck Tonnage Index measures the amount of freight trucks are moving across country each month. This index can directly be related to the economy. According to experts, trucking is the biggest means of freight transportation in the United States.

Freight trucks are transporting even more supplies, whether they be raw materials or finished productions, all over the country. When there is a decrease in this index that would mean an overall recession has been created. According to reports, there was an increase in the August levels of production and movement for truckers.

During a recession companies ship less things and the trucking industry is the first one affected. As of right now, truckers are seeing a steady flow of cargo which indicates that the economy is beginning to stabilize.

Leisure battery malfunction causes dim nights for truck drivers

Posted by Genie Wood on Wed, Oct 26, 2011 @ 07:42 AM

Long haul trucks are equipped with amenities that can help resemble a comforting atmosphere. The sleeping area of a truck has multiple features that are in sync with a mobile home. All of these extras including, DVD players, televisions and radios need an immense amount of battery power to function.

The battery charging system for these leisure batteries do not function at the same level the equipment requires. The duration of the battery life decreases if it is not charged properly, thus resulting in dim nights for truck drivers at rest stops.

There are different options that are being created in order to most effectively charge the leisure battery. Long distance truck drivers should consider their options so that they can extend the life of their battery and enjoy features of the truck that can remind them of home.

Deaf drivers now eligible for commercial driver's licenses

Posted by Genie Wood on Wed, Oct 19, 2011 @ 07:51 AM

There are over 20 hard of hearing and deaf truck drivers that have turned in paperwork to be considered for exclusion from DOT hearing requirements. These applicants are now being contemplated for a chance to obtain Commercial Driver's Licenses.

Constant support has managed for this issue to gain recognition with National Association of the Deaf.

The Department of Transportation has put in place testing to ensure that all truck drivers are competent on the road.

That testing made it almost impossible for deaf or hard of hearing truck drivers to receive a license.  The paperwork they submitted allows them to qualify for a license without having to take the formerly required hearing tests.
