Posted by Genie Wood on Tue, Jun 07, 2011 @ 02:33 AM

National Roadcheck 2011 begins Tuesday, June 7.

According to officials with the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance, truck and bus safety inspectors will be on the job day and night through June 10. Authorities will be checking vehicles and drivers at inspection sites along major highways across the country.

In addition to checks at inspection points, roving patrols and inspection vehicles will inspect drivers and vehicles traveling other roadways.

“Commercial motor vehicle inspectors work diligently every day to ensure that the commercial vehicles using our highways do so as safely as possible,” said Stephena A. Keppler, executive director of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance. “While a significant majority of vehicle operators are highly responsible, conscientious, and safe, a few in the minority are less so. “

Since Roadcheck began in 1988, inspections have numbered over one million.

Survey: Carriers Using Less Broker Services

Posted by Genie Wood on Fri, Apr 22, 2011 @ 04:13 AM

A recent survey finds that carriers have used less broker services during the past three months.

According to Transport Capital Partners LLC’s first quarter Business Expectations Survey, 87 percent of responding carriers have used less broker services since the year began. Transport Capital partner Richard Mikes said the survey shows a “dramatic turn around” since May of 2009, when two-thirds of carriers reported an increase in broker usage.

“Obviously the freight supply demand balance has shifted dramatically to the carriers, and they are using their capacity to serve the needs of their long term customers,” Mikes said. He added that publicly traded brokers achieve gross margins of 15 to 20 percent, which typically reduces what the carriers get for loads hauled for brokers.
