Texting Ban for Commercial Truck Drivers

Posted by Genie Wood on Fri, Jan 29, 2010 @ 01:32 AM

A new ruling by the federal government prohibits truck drivers and bus drivers from texting while driving. Concern about the use of cell phones while driving has risen in recent years as more and more people turn to texting, taking their eyes away from the road to send messages from their phones. Nineteen states and Washington, D.C., have already imposed a ban on texting while driving to all motorists.

The new ban takes effect immediately and applies to the drivers of commercial trucks and busses over ten-thousand pounds. Drivers who break the new law face a $2,700 fine.

Healthy Options for Truck Drivers

Posted by Genie Wood on Wed, Jan 20, 2010 @ 05:29 AM

Many nutritionists have stated that Americans in general need more healthy food options.  For individuals on the road,  it is difficult many times to have a healthy meal.   Many experts have recommended that replacing one meal a day with a healthy option can have a dramatic effect on an individual's health.  Further,  replacing unhealthy snacks with fruits or vegetables can also improve the overall health of an individual and improve their diet. Replacing sodas with water, juices, or tea is also a recommended practice by many nutritionists for an individual on the go.

FedEx To Raise Freight Prices

Posted by Genie Wood on Fri, Jan 15, 2010 @ 12:38 AM

FedEx has recently announced that it will be raising freight prices by 5.9% on February 1st.  The rate increases will apply to less-than-truck load shipments where a number of small loads are all brought together on one truck.  Other increases in shipping prices has increased across other areas of the company as well.   These rates are part of a standard increase after the company evaluates various aspects of its operations and attempts to pick the best price point.

Price increases across the entire industry are likely in the future.

Trucking Rules Eased Because of Cold

Posted by Genie Wood on Fri, Jan 08, 2010 @ 06:42 AM

With the cold front that has blown across the nation,  the driving conditions on the roads have decreased in many areas.  In some areas, ice and snow cover the road making it extremely difficult and dangerous to drive.  For some of these areas,  officials that regulate commerce have eased the rules for truckers to allow them to deliver their goods.

When running into harsh weather,  some truckers are having to be behind the wheel longer than normally allowed.  Some states have eased these rules because there is little that can be done to speed up the process, and many deliveries are extremely important.

Driving on New Year's Eve

Posted by Genie Wood on Wed, Dec 30, 2009 @ 03:34 AM

New Year's Eve is a time when many people welcome in the new year with a few drinks.  Because so many people are drinking - and potentially driving - at the same time all across the country, New Year's Eve is one of the most dangerous times to be driving.

If possible, avoid driving during New Year's Eve.  If you cannot avoid it, be especially vigilent and careful.  Avoid drivers who appear intoxicated, and alert police to drunk drivers.

Trucking Shipments Increase for Holidays

Posted by Genie Wood on Wed, Dec 16, 2009 @ 06:13 AM

The number of trucks reported on the road have increased greatly within the last month as many companies are having increased demand for the holiday season.  This increased demand has resulted in increased number of shipments,  which are expected to top out by next week.

The increased number of shipment has stretched some companies during the holiday season.  The increased demand is expected to die down sometime after the first week of January.

Posted by Genie Wood on Thu, Dec 10, 2009 @ 09:00 AM

A recent report that was released indicated that truck drivers that received an adequate amount of sleep had several benefits.  One of the surprising benefits is that truck drivers that got more sleep tended to eat healthier and less in the following days.

The study looked at over 542 male truck drivers who were on average 49 years-of-age. Truckers that received more sleep tended to have a healthier eating habit reportedly eating more fruits, vegetables, and not drinking as much soda.

Electric Trucks Possible in the Future

Posted by Genie Wood on Fri, Dec 04, 2009 @ 01:04 AM

Currently,  many companies are attempting to research electric vehicles.  Some engineers have stated that the possibility of electric trucks will be possible in the future.

Most current concerns with electric trucks include the cost and the distance of travel.  Electric vehicles are constrained because of the life of a battery charge which prevents them from travelling long distances.  If a truck had to stop and recharge several hours for every couple hundred of miles,  then the trucks would be greatly limited.  It will take serious research and development n technology in order to get to the point where trucks can become fully electric. Hybrid trucks will likely become more widely available before a completely electric truck hits the market.
