Cellphone ban for truckers begins next week

Posted by Genie Wood on Fri, Dec 30, 2011 @ 02:49 AM

The U.S. Department’s ban on handheld cellphone use for truckers will go into effect the first week of 2012.

Hands-free devices can still be utilized in trucks, but dialing, reaching and holding cellphones will no longer be permitted by commercial truck drivers. Each violation of the ban could result in a $2,750 fine.

If multiple offenses of this ban are cited, then the truck driver has the potential to lose his driver’s license. Trucking companies are urging their drivers to acquire a wireless headset so as to avoid confusion when driving through different states across the country.

Trucking industry performing better than overall economy

Posted by Genie Wood on Mon, Dec 19, 2011 @ 11:32 PM

Although the overall economy is still struggling, the trucking industry is performing exceptionally well.

Privately owned freight companies have reported an increase of 14 percent in sales since 2010. This increase in revenue is compared to the overall ecomony which is reporting a raise in sales but only by the single digits.

Two different factors have contributed to the success of the trucking industry for the 2011 fiscal year. One of those contributing factors regards the leveling of gas prices across the United States. The second factor deals with the elevated amount of manufacturing taking place, which has helped with the reconstruction of volume in the industry.

11-hour driving rule may be altered for truck drivers

Posted by Genie Wood on Thu, Dec 08, 2011 @ 12:22 AM

Truck drivers and insurance groups are hoping that the 11-hour rule that is currently imposed on the trucking industry will change.

Currently, truck drivers are required to drive for 11 hours every day of the week that they are working. Truck drivers are not paid for the amount of hours they work but rather for the amount of miles they drive. As a result of these long days, truck drivers are expected to live 16 years less than the average American.

A safer 10-hour rule has been proposed because the 11-hour rule can be a danger to the public. Every year there are approximately 4,000 fatalities that result from commercial truck accidents.  Although the current rule may increase the profits of the trucking companies, they are clearly a hazard to the truck driver's health.

A final regulation regarding this topic is set to be issued on December 30.

Trucker saves woman from potential murder

Posted by Genie Wood on Tue, Nov 22, 2011 @ 01:04 AM

A truck driver in Pennsylvania is being praised as a hero after he saved the life of a woman who was about to be murdered.

The trucker was driving along Interstate 380 when he noticed a car stopped with a man holding a gun to a woman's head. He decided he had to stop and help so he pulled his truck over and quickly approached the situation. The man tried to shoot the woman but the gun he was using had jammed. He was beating her with the edge of the gun when the trucker approached and pulled her into his truck with him.

The man followed the truck driver who began to swerve to obstruct his path. The driver made sure to radio in to other truck drivers why he was driving so eradically and he also alerted police.

Police were able to catch up to the pursuit and bring down the man with the gun. The man then confessed that he had every intention of killing the woman and then himself after he found out she was pregnant with his child. He was taken to jail and his bail was set at $2 million.

The truck driver told reporters that he knew he had to stop and help the woman because it was the right thing to do.

Recourse vs. Non-Recourse Truck Factoring

Posted by Genie Wood on Fri, Nov 18, 2011 @ 02:05 AM

Freight factoring consists of many options and varieties. The two main types of truck factoring include; recourse truck factoring and non-recourse truck factoring.

Recourse truck factoring means that the person purchasing the insurance on the truck is willing to put the credit on their shoulders. This responsibility of credit fees allows for the rates to be lower than non-recourse truck factoring and therefore more affordable.

Non-recourse truck factoring involves the company taking the credit risk so there is no credit liability for the driver. The company is responsible for dealing with credit problems. This option works well for companies that are operating between one and five trucks.

Diesel fuel prices create difficulty for truckers

Posted by Genie Wood on Wed, Nov 09, 2011 @ 02:51 AM

Although diesel fuel prices have been on the decline since the summer, overall the price is still substantially higher than it was in 2010.

Trucking companies are finding it difficult during this tough economic time to maintain profitability. Many trucking fleets are looking into the possibility of increasing their freight rates in hopes that it increases profits.

It has also been hard to find truck drivers across the United States. The shortage of drivers has also put a strain on revenue. But, there has been reasons to believe that the economy is leveling out and the trucking industry has started to improve.
