Fuel problems cause 110,000 trucks to be recalled
A recall has been announced by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in regards to trucks that utilize Detroit Diesel. These vehicles have potential fuel system problems. The recall affects 110,000 of these trucks that were produced between January 2006 and February 2012.
The engine models on these trucks are outfitted with DD13, DD15, or DD 16. Fuel leaking may be caused in these engines due to engine sensitivity during upkeep. These leaks could potentially start a fire, and could increase the likelihood of becoming involved in an accident on the roadway.
Owners of the affected trucks will be able to have the problem fixed for free at any facility that supports Detroit Diesel engine repairs.

Increasing gas prices hit trucking industry hard
Across the United States, gas prices are increasing. It is estimated that by summer, the price for one gallon of gasoline could be $5.
These elevated gas prices could negatively affect the trucking industry. If the economy starts to slow down, then the amount of freight could be impacted by the decline. When the freight loads are lighter, fewer trucks are needed for their transportation.
The rising gas prices will also play a large role in the trucking industry, because trucks can only be filled up with diesel fuel. This type of fuel tends to cost between 30 and 50 cents more a gallon than unleaded fuel.

A report released by FreightWatch International has shown that cargo theft in the United States reached a record high amount in 2011.
Compared to 2010, the amount of cargo theft increased by 9 percent in 2011. The report shows that in 2011, the theft rates were 974, which is close to an 8.8 percent increase from the 2010 figures.
A small bright side to this information is that the value of each stolen cargo decreased in 2011. The average amount of cargo stolen in 2011 was roughly $319,000. This decline alludes to the fact that truck drivers are valuing their cargo more and being more protective of their trucks, making thieves target lesser value shipments.

Lack of truck drivers continues, according to national survey
The national survey, Business Expectations Survey, is conducted by Transport Capital Partners, TCP, and this year determined that there is still a lack of experienced truck drivers in the industry.
The survey shows that roughly 70 percent of trucking carriers were having a hard time hiring additional truck drivers. Unseated trucks for carriers rose between 10 percent and 18 percent, up from 6 percent and 10 percent in the previous quarter.
TCP also found that carriers think wages should drastically increase for truckers if they are going to be able to fill vacant positions. There were 65 percent of carriers that thought the wages earned by truckers should be more than $60,000. That amount is an increase of 49 percent from the wages earned in May of 2011.
