More Truckers Use Safety Belts

Posted by Genie Wood on Mon, Mar 22, 2010 @ 07:53 AM

Commercial truck and bus drivers are using their safety belts more than in the past, according to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration in a statement made Friday. Today, 74 percent of these drivers use safety belts, compared to 65 percent in 2007.

The group took a survey of more than 20,000 commercial drivers at more than 800 roadside sites around the nation. The group hopes to keep encouraging the use of safety belts until every driver consistently uses a safety belt.

Arizona Might Reopen Rest Stops

Posted by Genie Wood on Wed, Mar 17, 2010 @ 06:32 AM

Arizona's Department of Transportation recently closed 13 of the state's 18 rest stop areas, because each rest stop costs about $300,000 to operate. The state hoped that doing this would help close a $100 million budget gap.

A state legislator is fighting to allow entities other than the state to reopen and fund these rest stops, however. The bill would allow local governments, American Indian tribes and private groups to pay the costs to operate the areas. The proposal has a support from both Democrat and Republican legislators.

Bose Releases High-Tech Chair

Posted by Genie Wood on Wed, Mar 10, 2010 @ 01:14 AM

Bose Corp. has officially released a new heavy-duty truck seat named the Bose Ride System. The retail price of $5,995 was revealed this week. The company unveiled the seat in late January, but it did not have a set price yet.

The chair is designed to compensate for movements before the driver feels them, helping prevent back pain. It is also intended to combat driver fatigue. The company hopes to cut health care costs and reduce accidents. They said that more than 50 percent of drivers have back problems. The new chair is seen as a major improvement over the current air-ride seats in most trucks today.

Cost of Diesel Still Climbs

Posted by Genie Wood on Wed, Mar 10, 2010 @ 12:59 AM

The Department of Energy predicts that the cost of diesel will rise to nearly $3 per gallon this year, and more than $3 next year. The Department made these projected increases based on the rising cost of crude oil per barrel.

Both diesel and gasoline saw a jump in cost over the last three weeks. Gas averaged near $2.75. The department expects it to rise to an average of $2.84 this year, up from $2.35 last year. This is similar to a previous forecast made by the Department of Energy.

Clean Trucks Plan Won't Affect Ruling

Posted by Genie Wood on Wed, Mar 03, 2010 @ 01:04 AM

The federal court ruled on the Port of Los Angeles clean trucks plan, but it will not really affect a ruling from a lower court regarding the port. The lower ruling says that the port must not implement most of the port's concession requirements temporarily, according to American Trucking Associations.

The new ruling allows the port to enforce motor vehicle safety rules. The port had wanted to only allow drivers who were employees of trucking companies, but owner-operators could continue operating at the port. The dispute surrounding the issue is scheduled for trial in mid-March.

Government Restores Transportation Funds

Posted by Genie Wood on Wed, Mar 03, 2010 @ 12:50 AM

Federal funding for transportation was reinstated Tuesday as President Obama signed a Department of Transportation bill. The funding had been held up since Friday and disrupted work for thousands of transportation employees nationwide. Trucking associations urged Congress to consider the funding issue and make it move along quickly.

The bill also extended unemployment benefits. The workers, many of whom came from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, returned to work Wednesday morning.

Recession Causes Abundance of Used Trucks

Posted by Genie Wood on Wed, Feb 24, 2010 @ 01:34 AM

Trucking companies are leaning toward buying used vehicles now that supply has gone up and prices have gone down. Several years ago, fleets often used leased trucks, but now a lot of contracts are up. Many trucking companies have gone out of business, and banks are taking their equipment. This has added an abundance of used trucks and equipment to the market.

Experts say that formerly, a buyer could purchase two used trucks for the price of one new truck. Now, you can purchase three used trucks for the same price value. Many used trucks have better engines than before, and some fleets are looking into buying used equipment for the fist time.

Medium Truck Sales Go Up

Posted by Genie Wood on Wed, Feb 24, 2010 @ 01:20 AM

The sale of medium-duty trucks in the U.S. went up 5.7 percent from last year. January 2010 sales were up from January 2009, but they went down 32 percent from December 2009. The spike in December may be related to the anticipated emissions regulations that went into effect Jan. 1.

Six of the 13 brands selling this type of truck reported selling more than in January of last year, while three reported selling fewer. Data shows that truck manufacturers sold more than 16,000 medium-duty trucks in January 2010.

Go Green Without Losing Green

Posted by Genie Wood on Wed, Feb 17, 2010 @ 03:59 AM

The trucking industry is searching for ways to implement environment-friendly techniques while maintaining a successful business model. Different methods work for different fleets, and industry executives are encouraged to explore their options to see what best fits them.

Truck aerodynamics can be modified, and even wide-base tires can cut fuel consumption. Simply moving the tractor and trailer closer together, minimizing the air space between, can make the vehicle more aerodynamic. Incorporating mapping technology and improved directions can reduce the miles spent traveling out of route, which saves fuel as well.

Georgia Truckers Donate to Investigation Unit

Posted by Genie Wood on Wed, Feb 17, 2010 @ 03:15 AM

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation's Major Theft Unit was created to target those responsible for cargo theft. The Georgia Motor Trucking Association recently donated $16,000 to the unit. Cargo theft is a big concern for freight haulers, and carries a significant cost. Georgia's governor commended the company for helping efforts to combat the crime.

The unit, created last year, has already recovered $17 million in stolen cargo and arrested 71 people, as well as seizing $1.2 million in drug contraband. Georgia is one of the leading states for cargo crime, but the state hopes to use the contribution to purchase equipment for the unit and to train law enforcement.
